Uruguay and the Netherlands will go head to head in the first 2010 World Cup semi-final on Tuesday night, both looking to go one step closer to World Cup glory. Holland are the odds-on favourites to reach the semi-final, as Uruguay play in their first World Cup semi-final since they last won the competition in 1950.

Uruguay sneaked through to the World Cup semi-finals thanks to a penalty shoot-out win over Ghana in what was an amazing match. Despite starting well, Uruguay spent long periods of the match on the back foot as Ghana dominated posession and looked the more likely to score. After conceding a goal just before half time, it was Diego Forlan who bailed out the team with a fine free-kick midway through the second half that would result the match 1-1 after ninety minutes. Ghana again looked the more likely of the two teams to go on and win the match in extra time and after Luis Suarez handled on the line in the last minute, Ghana had the opportunity to be the first African team to reach a World Cup semi-final. Fortunately for Uruguya Asamoah Gyan fluffed his lines and missed the sport kick and Diego Forlan and team-mates went on to win the match in the shootout.

The Netherlands caused an upset by beating Brazil 2-1 in the first quarter-final after being a goal down to the five time champions. Defensive lapses and a sending off for Felipe Melo somewhat gifted the Dutch a win thanks to an own goal by the aforementioned Melo and a Wesley Sneijeder header. As a result, some bookmakers made the Netherlands their favourites to win the World Cup for the first time in their history.

Netherlands Form

It seems as though the Dutch have stuttered and spluttered their way to the World Cup semi-finals without losing a match and needing to get out of second gear. Even after going a goal down to Brazil in the quarter-finals, the Dutch were gifted an own goal and some terrible defending from the five-time champions meant that the Netherlands look a good bet for the final.
