Paraguay and Spain will go head to head in the 2010 World Cup quarter-final on Saturday night, both looking to go one step closer to World Cup glory. Spain are the odds-on favourites to reach the semi-final, as Paraguay play in their first ever World Cup quarter-final.

Paraguay have been one of the surprise packages at the 2010 World Cup. They topped Group F, which contained current World Champions Italy and were very good in beating Slovakia, the group's runner-up 2-0. The team is spearheaded by Manchester City's Roque Santa Cruz and Borussia Dortmund's Lucas Barrios. Very solid defensively, Paraguay rely on their forwards to hold the ball up and bring the midfielders into play.

Spain were impressive in beating Portugal in the last sixteen. The Portuguese went into the match having not conceded a goal and kept the European Champiosn at bay until midway through the second half when some sublime short passing gave David Villa the chance to score his fourth goal of the World Cup. Since the first match defeat to Switzerland, Spain have at times repeated the kind of form that won them their first ever major championship two years ago in Austria and Switzerland.

Spain Form

Since losing 1-0 to Switzerland in their opening match, Spain have bounced back with three straight wins, their most recent in the second round over Portugal. Forward David Villa has scored four of the five goals Spain have scored, but they will have to break a long standing trend if they wish to lift the trophy, as no team has ever gone on to win the World Cup after losing their first match.

Latest Team News

Paraguay manager will be keen to stick to the same team that has remained unbeaten throughout the World Cup, although Borussia Dortmund's Nelson Valdez may have played his way into a starting berth for the quarter-final after an eye-catching display from the bench against Japan on Tuesday.

Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque's biggest worry is over the form and fitness of Liverpool striker Fernando Torres. Torres has looked out of form throughout the tournament and was substituted to some effect in Tuesday's second round match with Portugal, by Fernando Llorente. Spain have amazingly only picked up one booking so far in the tournament so there are no suspension worries for Del Bosque.
