Monday 14th June is an important date in the diary of football fans as it will see the defending World Champions Italy make their bow in the 2010 World Cup as they take on Paraguay. The Italians of course won in 2006 by beating France in the final and they will be out to make a positive start to the defense of their crown, it will not be easy though as they face the tough Paraguayans at the Cape Town Stadium. The new stadium in Cape town will be the host for the match with two teams who had straightforward paths through the qualification rounds. Paraguay should not be underestimated here as they showed during qualification in South America, they posses some dangerous players who will be itching to put one over the World Champions.
The main man for the Paraguayans will be Rogue Santa Cruz and they will need him on form if they are to upset the odds and claim the in against Italy.
Paddy Power are refunding all losing first/last goalscorer, correct score and scorecast bets on this match if the final score is 0-0
Latest Team News
If Paraguay are to have any chance of upsetting the odds against the World Champions then they will need a fully fit squad to chose from on match day. We will be keeping our beady eye on the Paraguay camp in the build up to the race, will have all the injury news and suspensions that will affect the match day squad. the same can be said of the Italians who in theory should have the strength in depth to deal with an injury or two but nevertheless all the big news will be made available.
Italy are full of star names with Manager Marcelo Lippi hoping to have the likes of Alberto Gilardino, Fabio Cannavaro and Andrea Pirlo in his first eleven when they take on Paraguay. they do look a slightly ageing team but having said that they did in 2006 and we know what happened there so the Italians should once again be taken seriously. They will look to play the Italian way which has proved so successful over the years by keeping it tight at the back and hoping to nick a goal or two when the time is right.
There have been no previous meetings between these two in International football which is a shame for all those punters looking to judge the form. the full result for the match will be on offer to punters as and when the 90 mins are up and we will be able to see whether the Italians are in good shape in regards retaining the World Cup.
