Greece missed out on qualification on goal difference to Bosnia and Herzegovina at the top of Group G in the UEFA qualifying section for the 2014 World Cup. The Greeks now must come through a play-off in November against Romania if they are to reach the finals in Brazil next summer. Greece have made two World Cups in the past but have never gone past the group stages, although they did upset the odds to win the European Championship in 2004. A comfortable 4-2 aggregate play-off win over Romania was enough to see the Greeks reach the 2014 finals. Greece have been drawn in Group C alongside Colombia, Ivory Coast and Japan.
Greece scraped through to the second round for the first time in their history when beating the Ivory Coast to finish second in Group C. They were then knocked out on penalties against Costa Rica.
