Germany confirmed the inevitable when beating Ghana 1-0 in their final group game to top Group D and set up aWorld Cupsecond round match with the England. Joachim Low's German side took the tournament by storm when beating Australia 4-0 in their opening game. However, since then they lost to Serbia and were less than impressive in squeaking home past Ghana and it seems as though some of the momentum has gone from the team. The Germans have a youthful feel to them, but they'll need to be on their game against England.
Fabio Capello's England team made very heavy weather of qualifying from Group C, but a fine performance in their final match beating Slovenia 1-0 will have sent the Germans a warning. Despite the victory, an injury time winner from Landon Donovon in the USA versus Algeria game meant the United States topped the group on goals scored. England could well rue the chances they missed against Slovenia, as the route to the final has become eminently more difficult as a result of finishing runners-up. If a second round against Germany wasn't test enough, the winner will likely play Argentina in the quarter-finals.

Two wins from the Germans three Group D matches left them topping the group. Joachim Low's side were beaten in their second match against Serbia, when losing Miroslav Klose to an early red card. The Serbian goal is the only goal Germany have conceded and they have scored five themselves. Joachim Low will be able to welcome back Klose after suspension for the game with England.

England are unbeaten but that doesn't tell the whole story. The draw with the USA wasn't great but not for a mistake from Robert Green in goal they could have won the match. Things took a turn for the worst in England's second game where they drew 0-0 with Algeria. If the result wasn't bad enough, the performace was bordering on the dire and many people were put off betting on England to win their final game with Slovenia. However, England were impressive in beating Slovenia in their last match, although there was the obligatory nervous last ten minutes and plenty of chances went begging.

Joachim Low can welcome back Miroslav Klose from suspension for the match against England but is sweating on the fitness of playmaker Mesut Ozil, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Jerome Boateng.
Fabio Capello can bring back jamie Carragher from suspension but may keep faith with the defence that kept a clean sheet versus Slovenia. Wayne Rooney was substituted in the match and although the Manchester United striker still looks short of form, it is unlikely that he will be dropped.
