France finished second behind world champions Spain in Group I of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. The French now must come through a play-off against the Ukraine in November is they are to qualify for next summer's finals. France booked their place in Brazil as they bid to emulate the 1998 World Cup winning French side, but left it late coming from 2-0 down to beat Ukraine 3-2 on aggregate in a play-off. The French have been drawn in Group E for the World Cup alongside Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras.
France got their World Cup campaign off to a good start with a comfortable 3-0 win over Honduras and qualified for the second round after trouncing Switzerland 5-2, affording a 0-0 draw in their final game against Ecuador whilst still topping the group. An unconvincing performance in their second round match against Nigeria followed but two late goals were enough to see France through to the quarter finals where they eventually lost to Germany 1-0.
