Brazil are the early market leaders in the betting for the 2014 World Cup, for which they are hosts. Current World and European Champions, Argentina are second favourites ahead of holders Spain.
Hosts Brazil continue to head the betting for the 2014 World Cup finals, best price 9/2 to win their sixth World Cup and their first as the host nation. Argentina are also well fancied whilst reigning champions Spain are slightly on the drift following Barcelona and Real Madrid's defeats at the semi-final stage of the Champions League to German opposition, with Germany now around 11/2 with the bookies as a result.
Japan became the first team to join hosts Brazil in the finals next summer following a successful qualification from the Asian group. A 1-1 draw with Australia was enough to ensure the Japanese qualification with a game to go and will be taking place in their 5th World Cup finals. Australia were quick to follow suit with a 1-0 over Iran assuring their place at the 2014 finals.
England defender and former captain Rio Ferdninad has announced his retirement from International football. The Manchester United centre-back, now 34 won 81 caps for England and was a scorer against Denmark in the 2002 World Cup.
Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city could lose the right to host games at the finals next year after news emerged that they are struggling to build the Mane Garrincha Stadium in time for next summer's event. The venue had been scheduled to host the opening game but that is now in doubt.
The latest batch of World Cup qualifiers continue to take place all over the world, with the Republic of Ireland beating the Faroe Islands 3-0 and Scotland surprising Croatia 1-0 last Friday.
